CHORUS AUDITIONS

La Jolla Symphony Chorus welcomes experienced and enthusiastic musicians from the UCSD campus (faculty, staff, students) and the greater San Diego community who are interested in a serious weekly commitment to choral singing, elevating the art form of performing live classical music, and passionate about performing newly-composed works and works that may be lesser-known or not performed very often. Open auditions are held by appointment at UCSD in early fall and throughout the academic year. Full yearly participation is preferred, but community musicians who can perform 2 of 3 concerts, for example, are considered. If you desire a quality music-making experience at the college level and semi-professional level, then this is the ensemble for you!

FACULTY, STAFF, AND COMMUNITY MUSICIANS

For the 2019 fall quarter, La Jolla Symphony Chorus holds open auditions for all voice sections on August 24 and September 25 at UCSD. Audition appointments must be made using the online form that will be available on this page beginning August 1, 2019.

UCSD UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE STUDENT MUSICIANS

UCSD graduate and undergraduate students are invited to open auditions on August 24 and September 25. Students will have additional opportunities to audition on October 2 and 9 beginning at 6:00 p.m. Student audition appointments must be made using the online form that will be available on this page beginning August 1, 2019.

Chorus membership is offered as a credit class, Music95D, and may be taken pass/no pass or for a letter grade.

AUDITION PROCESS
The audition process is designed to be thorough and fair so we can add members to the chorus who possess the quality of voice, musicianship skills, willingness to improve as-needed, and passion for our mission. Previous choral singing experience is helpful, but not mandatory, if willing to learn and work hard. Auditions will consist of vocalization exercises, musicianship assessment, and singing a brief (one minute) prepared piece.

VENUE LOCATION
Choral auditions are held at the UCSD Conrad Prebys Music Center (CPMC) with convenient parking across the street in the Gilman Parking Structure. For driving directions and a locator map (Click Here)
REHEARSAL REQUIREMENTS & VENUES

CONCERT ATTIRE
Women
All women chorus members must purchase LJSC’s black concert dress at a cost of approximately $96. Coordinated by Dress Maven, Deanna Johnson, women will have a fitting session to try on skirts and tops at the beginning of the season or quarter. Checks and cash are accepted for payment and collected by the Dress Maven who places the order. (Make checks payable to Deanna Johnson, with “LJSC Concert Attire” in the memo.) If $96 represents a financial hardship, it may be possible to arrange payment in installments and/or make alternative arrangements. A minimum first payment of $35 is required at the time of fitting.
Men
Men wear traditional black tuxedoes, black shirts with Mandarin collars (no ties) and long sleeves, black socks, and black shoes. If assistance is needed when purchasing attire, please ask the Section Leader or Chorus Manager. If purchasing concert attire represents a financial hardship, it may be possible to arrange payment in installments and/or make alternative arrangements.
Choral Folder
All members must use a black folder for performances. Any type of black folder is acceptable but a black choral concert folder is preferred.
