About the La Jolla Symphony
With the American Premiere of Philip Glass’ “Cello Concerto”, performances of Mahler’s 2nd Symphony, Bernstein’s “Mass”, Stravinsky’s “Rite of Spring”, and Britten’s “War Requiem”, Berlioz and Verdi’s “Requiem” the La Jolla Symphony has established itself as one of the most elite community-based symphony orchestras in the country. The makeup of the orchestra is 10-20% UCSD students, and 80-90% community members with various occupations, which include teachers, doctors, engineers, dentists, scientists, college professors, and professional musicians who donate their time. We are a volunteer organization (unpaid), with high expectations, sharing a passion for music, who also enjoy the camaraderie, working with a great conductor, and performing cutting edge repertoire.

La Jolla Symphony Chorus welcomes experienced and enthusiastic vocalists from the UCSD campus (faculty, staff, students) and the greater San Diego community who are interested in a serious weekly commitment to choral singing, elevating the art form of performing live classical music, and passionate about performing newly-composed works and works that may be lesser-known or not performed very often. Open auditions are held by appointment at UCSD in early fall and throughout the academic year, as-needed. Yearly participation (September-June) is preferred, but community musicians who can perform 2 of 3 concerts, for example, are considered. If you desire a quality music-making experience at the college level and semi-professional level, then this is the ensemble for you!
Faculty, Staff and Community Vocalists
For the 2018 winter and spring quarters, La Jolla Symphony Chorus holds open auditions for all voice sections on January 13, 2018 beginning at 10:00 a.m. at UCSD. To arrange an appointment, contact Chorus Manager Mea Daum by email at firstname.lastname@example.org or by phone at 858-243-2045, evenings.
UCSD Undergraduate and Graduate Student Vocalists
UCSD graduate and undergraduate students are invited to open auditions on January 13. Students will have additional opportunities to audition on Wednesdays January 10 and 17 beginning at 6:00 p.m. We prefer to make appointments for student auditionees, but we also audition walk-ups as long as time is available. Interested students are encouraged to contact the manager by email at email@example.com or by phone at 858-243-2045, evenings.
Chorus membership is offered as a credit class, Music95D, and may be taken pass/no pass or for a letter grade.
The audition process is designed to be thorough and fair so we can add members to the chorus who possess the quality of voice, musicianship skills, willingness to improve as-needed, and passion for our mission. Previous choral singing experience is helpful, but not mandatory, if willing to learn and work hard. Auditions will consist of vocalization, sight reading, musicianship assessment, and a 1-minute prepared excerpt/piece. The process is outlined here: Click here for more information.
Choral auditions are held at the UCSD Conrad Prebys Music Center (CPMC) with convenient parking across the street in the Gilman Parking Structure. For driving directions and a locator map Click Here
